Welcome to Whissonsett

Whissonsett, or Witcingkeseta as it was known in the Domesday Book, means either the settlement of the Witcing tribe or a place of watery meadows. The village is in a valley on a tributary of the River Wensum with many wells and springs so ‘watery meadows’ describes it well.

Set in the heart of rural Norfolk, it is situated between the Market Towns of Fakenham and Dereham. Whissonsett is surrounded by farm land and orchards; the Village itself encircles a beautiful 14th century Church, St Mary the Virgin.

It is an idyllic scene, but behind this seemingly timeless picture is the hard work carried out by generation after generation of ordinary Norfolk people to preserve and beautify the church and village they love.

With a history dating from the Dark Ages and The Iceni Tribe to Modern times there is a lot more to the Village than first meets the eye, so whether you`re a villager or visitor we hope you find something useful, interesting and informative.

The Parish Council

The Parish Council is made up of seven members who represent the village on various matters.

We are effectively the third tier of local government, the other two being Norfolk County Council and Breckland District Council.

The Parish Council usually meet at 7.30pm in the Village Hall on the second Monday of every other month - January, March, May, July, September November.

Members of the public are very welcome to attend and are able to speak during the open forum, which is part of every meeting.

The Council are always keen to hear from anyone with ideas on how to improve local facilities.

We are responsible for:

  • the play area

  • the allotments

  • commenting on planning applications

  • the village notice boards

  • the bus shelter

  • the village sign

  • Spring well

  • Campingland railings & turnstiles

  • the SAM II speed sign

  • the defibrillator

  • general maintenance around the village
