Subject: Ship Passenger List of The "John & Sara" out of London 1651 and bound for New England with Scottish Prisoners. Submitted: TC Parziale 6/25/00 -- added to this list is a possible variations column which I hope will allow search engines to find the names easier than the phonetic way they appear. Source: Historical and Genealogical Registers, New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, Samuel G. Drake, Publisher, ©1847 Vol - 1 - 50 - (Oct 1847 pg 378-379) ***************************************************************************** TRANSCRIBERS NOTE: SIGNIFICANCE TO STRAFFORD, COUNTY Many of these prisoners on the John and Sarah were taken at the Battle of Dunbar, 3 Sept. 1650, and some at the battle of Worcester about a year later. From the book "History of the Town of Durham, New Hampshire" by Everett S. Stackpole and Lucien Thompson, I have learned the following. (Pg. 75) "The prisoners taken at Worcester were marched up to London and there confined for a few months in the artillery grounds at Tuthill Fields, perhaps half a mile west of Westminister Palace. Here they were allowed for daily rations a pound of bread and half a pound of cheese. Shelter seems to have been provided for the sick only. Two Hundred and seventy-two of these prisoners were sent to Boston in the ship called the "John and Sara" and were consigned to Thomas Kemble, a merchant of Charlestown, Mass. This Thomas Kemble was part owner with Valentine Hill in the mills at Durham Falls and Lamprey River. He also owned lands in Maine and did an extensive business in lumber. He saw that the young Scotch prisoners would be useful men in sawmills and so he disposed of many of them in this way. Richard Leader had charge of some Scotchmen at the Lynn Iron Works and later, in 1652, took some of them with him to work in the mills at South Berwick, then called Great Works." Thomas Kimball and Valentine Hill seem to have taken advantage of Cromwell's success against the Scottish and many ended up in our County of Strafford. ***************************************************************************** London This 11th of November, 1651; Captain John Greene; "Wee whose names are under written freighters of your shipe the John & Sara doe order yow forthwith as winde & weather shall permitt to sett saile for Boston in New England & there deliver our Orders and Servants to Tho.
