passenger list INDIAN QUEEN - Wellington 1857

Journal by ngairedith

big thank you to Tessa for finding a passenger list for the INDIAN QUEEN
ALSO READ the helpful comments at end

* The Indian Queen was a 1050 tons clipper which departed Liverpool 1 Nov 1856 arriving in Wellington Friday 30 Jan 1857 with 15 cabin and 400+ steerage passengers at £20 a head.
Captain D. F. Jobson & Medical officer Dr J. B. Tuke, Esq.
She was the second ship of James Baines & Co's Black Ball line of packets and was a sister ship to the Oliver Lang.
NOTE The list is actually of the signed (and overdue) promissory notes of the men from that voyage and is probably not a complete list of the passengers which varies from paper to paper and over time I have seen from 270 to 340 to even 451! immigrants (plus other (cabin) passengers) on board.
The report that there were 90 married men, 90 married woman, 63 single men, 13 single women, 68 boys, 60 girls and 21 infants who disembarked is probably more realistic. I will add further names and any relevant info to this journal, as found.

There was also a full cargo of general merchandise
* 22 deaths occurred on board (have also seen a report of 12) during the voyage. 20 children died of the measles and 2 adults (Mr & Mrs Fitness) died of severe diarrhoea. There were reported to have been 4 births on board

A misunderstanding is reported to have arisen in Wellington between the provincial authorities and the immigrants. It appears that a verbal engagement was made by the agent of the province in Liverpool to the effect that all men emigrating would receive employment immediately on landing at 5s a day. In consequence, employment was offered on the roads and public works but the rate of wages was reduced to 4s a day. The men to whom the promise was given by the agent stood out for its complete performance and threatened that if 5s were not given that they would not pay their promissory notes when they came due, at periods of twelve and twenty-four months.
Because of this threatened refusal one of the recusants was summoned and imprisoned and police were stationed on board vessels about to eave the harbour and searched them to prevent re-emigration.
A number of the emigrants assembled before the police office using threats and 'violent language'.

The promissory notes were signed in Liverpool but were not stamped and a question was raised about their legality.

* the number after each name is the number of emigrating people in the family the promissory note was signed for. This may, or may not, include the 'head of the family' who signed (apart from 1, I would think). The more info I can find on each family who traveled the more evident it will become
* birth/death dates in brackets are mine

Hi Ngaire
I'm conacring you about your post re The Indian Queen: https://www.familytreecircles.com/indian-queen-28081.html

Your information re the FITNESS family (my ancestors) has some inaccuracies as follows:
FITNESS, Joseph - 4 (1827-1856) CORRECT
.. wife Emily nee Gardner (1827-1856) Is EMMA not Emily
.. son Jabez Fitness (1850-1915) CORRECT
.. son Joseph Fitness (1852?-1856) Joseph died 1910.

See https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS19100824.2.99.1
https://images.findagrave.com/photos/2016/328/173038858_1479981972.jpg

.. son John (1856-1856) CORRECT
NOTE Joseph & Emily died from severe diarrhoea CORRECT
and the measles outbreak on board killed all their children, except 7 year old Jabez, leaving him an orphan. No only son John died

It is said that Mrs Mary Ann Liverton took care of him. MAYBE - do you have a reference for this as the family understand that they were cared for by a relative, Mary Burgess, (nee Fitness) who was travelling on the same boat.

Hello Ngaire. I am a descendant of Mary Burgess (G.G.Grandson). Karen is correct. The two boys, Jabez and Joseph survived the voyage. They were taken in by their Aunty, Mary Burgess & her husband George. Its unclear just what part Mary Liverton played but she was a Saloon Passenger and may have offered better accommodation for the two boys plus their infant brother John after their parents Joseph & Emma died from diarrhoea off the coast of Brazil. Their infant John died a day or so short of landing at Wellington.

My research led me to this website (https://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-Bre02Whit-t1-body-d3-d1-d5-d16.html) that shows the Indian Queen sailed from London on November 5th 1856 with 451 passengers. It may well have originally departed Liverpool 5 days earlier. This might explain the difference in passenger numbers that you have. Our folk emigrated from Frant in East Sussex (Fitness family may have been living at nearby Tonbridge) so a departure from London makes sense.

The Fitness boys were raised by Mary & George Burgess who moved from Wellington to Auckland on 16th September 1857 following a spate of earthquakes. They had 3 boys of their own, Ebenezer, Samuel & Amos. They all lived at the top of Parnell in a bungalow opposite where the Holy Trinity Cathedral now stands.
